Le Texan installé désormais en France après notamment un passage de trois années au Mexique au début de ce millénaire, remet le doigt et la voix sur ‘son’ Amérique, en allant de New York à Dallas, en passant par le Mississippi et le Texas. Un opus que vous n’oublierez pas de glisser dans le lecteur de votre ordi, non plus, car comme tant d’autres albums du label Dixiefrog, celui-ci comporte également son ‘bonus’, un très beau clip de ‘Sometimes The Truth’.
Un opus qui marque incontestablement ce début d’année, qui consacre un grand, un très grand songwriter, et qui finira sans nul doute dans le Top 5 des tous meilleurs albums 2011 !!

Sometimes The Truth est le 7ème album depuis 1993 , tous chez le label à la grenouille (Dixiefrog) , de Neal Black , natif de San Antonio, Texas, mais établi en France depuis quelques années. Qui dit Texas dit blues rock, ZZ top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chris Duarte, Alan Haynes, Smokin'Joe Kubeck et des dizaines d’autres guitaristes plus ou moins inspirés, mais plus que de cette lignée Neal Black est de la race des songwriters, des Calvin Russell, des John Campbell, des Townes Van Zandt et propose un blues authentique qui prend aux tripes , parfois sombre, parfois enlevé, porté par une énorme voix rocailleuse reconnaissable entre mille (entre Tom Waits et John Campbell) et par un jeu de guitare sans esbroufe, avec d’excellents passage de slide . Le blues rock n’est pas délaissé pour autant, certains titres arrachent même vraiment, sans effets de manche inutiles. Cet album a été enregistré en partie à New York, chez son ami Popa Chubby  , le reste en France, avec de nombreux invités..,Vous l’aurez comprit un album qui m’a carrément emballé, et qui sera sûrement sur mon podium des albums de l’année (même si l’année est loin d’être finie).

Neal Black nous offre son plus bel opus, sur lequel il invite ses amis américains, Mason Casey,  et Popa Chubby ainsi que les français Fred Chapellier, Nico Wayne Toussaint .Le must actuel du blues-rauque.

Out of San Antonio, Texas, gruff voiced singer and muscular guitarist Neal spends much of his time in Europe these days – and America’s loss is our gain. He is Dixiefrog’s longest-serving artist, and another of the labels’ stalwarts, Popa Chubby, helps out here in places with guitar, vocal and engineering duties. This CD contains plenty of just the kind of hard-edged, wailing, boogying blues-rock you would expect, though occasionally tempered with an Americana approach – try the relatively tender and slyly (pointedly) humorous ‘Holiday Inn In Heaven’ with its prominent dobro playing. ‘Mississippi Doctor’ has a voodoo theme, and several others, such as the opening ‘New York City Blues’ and the appropriately Tex-Mex flavored ‘Gringo Bring Me Your Guns’, concentrate on the less salubrious side of life.. The thoughtful, moody title track, with its striking a cappella opening from Neal  , make  this a fine release all round.

“Sometimes The Truth” is intussen de 12de cd van Neal.  Van iemand met zijn status van dienst mag je top kwaliteit verwachten, en die krijg je ook. 13 songs die je naar de keel grijpen. De gitaar is bij hem in zeer bekwame handen terecht, maar het handelsmerk van Neal blijft zijn voortreffelijke stem. Doorleefd, ruw, gesmeerd met de nodige whiskeys, je voelt wat hij zingt.
Naast de prachtige gitaar solo’s die je te horen krijgt moet je vooral ook eens luisteren naar de teksten. “Holiday Inn In heaven” of ook nog “Yesterday’s Promises Tomorrow” zijn echte pareltjes.  Op de instrumentale nummers zoals “Chicken Shack Cognac” en “Buda, Texas Boogie” speelt hij kwistig om met zijn gitaar kwaliteiten. Heel de cd wordt je gedragen door muziekale golven, die je raken van kop tot teen. Ongevoelig kan je hier onmogelijk voor blijven. “Sometimes The Truth” raakt je diep van binnen, en laat je diep in je ziel kijken.

 CD van de Mand !! Neal’s stem is zo lekker rauw, doorrookt en is uitermate geschikt voor de muziekstijl die hij prefereert te spelen.  Luister maar eens goed naar bijvoorbeeld ‘Lie To Be Loved’ en ‘Holliday Inn In Heaven’, op het laatste nummer speelt hij ook nog slidegitaar op een puike wijze.
Ballads liggen hem ook wel zoals blijkt op ‘Yesterday’s Promises Tomorrow’ en Texmex laat hij ook niet links liggen. Dat kun je wel horen op ‘Gringo Bring Me Your Guns’ met op de accordeon Christophe Duvernet en een toepasselijke slide. Dat Neal enige tijd in Mexico heeft geleefd heeft hij verwerkt in dit nummer dat gaat over armoede, smokkel, wapens en drugs. Een nummer, als je de tekst goed in je opneemt, dat niet in je koude kleren gaat zitten. “Sometimes The Truth” behoort voor mij tot een van de top albums die ik dit jaar heb mogen recenseren. Keer op keer lukt het mij om in vervoering te raken van de muziek zoals hier gespeeld en dat is de waarheid, niets dan de waarheid.

La sua musica è un misto di Texas Blues-rock, atmosfere vagamente roots e intrise di swamp rock e voodoo, la voce roca e vissuta, sempre più segnata dalle intemperie della vita e una notevole abilità alla chitarre, acustiche, elettriche e resonator oltre che che a SRV lo avvicina al compianto John Campbell (un musicista poco noto al grande pubblico ma assai considerato dai colleghi musicisti e da noi appassionati).Chicken Shack Cognac è uno spiritato strumentale un po’ alla Albert Lee (tra country e rock) con la solista di Neal Black che duetta con un altro compagno di etichetta, l’ottimo Fred Chapellier,per un finale raffinato e particolare che conferma la versatilità di questo ottimo musicista!!!

With lines such as "Welcome to New York City where the subway rats wear Italian shoes," "war lord politicians" and "walking in the cemetery sunshine reading poetry on gravestones," Black isn't blowing smoke up your skirt and telling you everything's going to be hunky dory. True-ringing topics run from Mexican drug-war participants (Gringo Bring Me Your Guns) to the lines and lies rakes, rounders, junkies and drunks have used for centuries (Yesterday's Promises Tomorrow)..
But all's not bleak with Black. The disc's instrumentals, including Chicken Shack Cognac and Buda, Texas Boogie, on which he swaps rollicking riffs and solos with Popa Chubby and guitarist Fred Chapellier, are positively joyful. Sometimes the Truth hurts, but not always.
